Dr. K.K.Mathew

Our R&D Department is under the guidance of Dr.K.K.Mathew, who is a Reasearch Chemist with a wide range of experience, He is a student of the eminent Organic Chemist and Nobel Prize winner Dr.J.W.Conforth, F.R.S. It was his work under Dr.Conforth that earned him the Doctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of London. Apart from working in several fields of Organic Chemistry, Dr.Mathew has undergone special training at the National Institute of Medical Research, London, in 'Synthetic Drugs and the study of Drug Action by Tracer Techniques'. He has been the Professor of Chemistry at the Prestigious Maharaja's College in Cochin and he was teaching post graduate students Organic Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and guiding research students for Ph.D Degree in the University of Kerala.

1982
PERFUMERY ITEMS

Leela Enterprises, now a full fledged sophisticated chemical manufacturing unit, was started in 1982, by Sri. K.C.Sundaram, a well known entrepreneur of Kochi, joining hands with Dr. K.K.Mathew, M.Sc, Ph.D (London), a senior and highly experienced Research Chemist. The unit started producing certain perfumery compounds used for the soap and cosmetic industry. Soon our products earned a good name. The sales grew quickly.

1985
SULPHONEPHTHALEIN DYES

The excellent facilities available at our unit combined with the skill of our technical team, prompted us to produce several SULPHONEPHTHALEIN DYES used as pH indicators. As substitutes for the hitherto imported items, our dyes caught the Indian and certain foreign markets.

1988
1,10 - PHENANTHROLINE

A major success for our unit was the manufacture of 1,10-PHENANTHROLINE, a versatile compound used for detecting and estimating iron and some other metals. The Iron complex of PHENANTHROLINE known as 'Ferroin' is a valuable oxidation-reduction indicator. The addition of PHENANTHROLINE greatly accelerates the drying of oil paints and the toxic lead compounds usually employed can be totally eliminated by the use of this agent. All major chemical distributors of India are buying their requirements of this material from us and we are proud to state that the quality of our material has enabled us to penetrate into global markets.

1992
BIOLOGICAL STAINS - DYES

We launched successfully in 1992 certain dyes used as Biological Stains - such as Light Green SF Yellowish, Thionin Acetate, Janus Green, Methyl Green, etc. which more than meet the minimum requirements of the Biological Stains Commission of USA.

1998
THYROXINE

We entered the Pharmaceutical field in 1998. A land mark of our organisation is the production of Thyroxine as the first unit in India to successfully manufacture the item. The importance of thyroid supplement is well known today and this is the reason why governments are insisting on adding iodides to common salt used in food. In India at present no company is producing this highly essential item. Our project for its synthetic production has been successful. Our sister concern 'Leela Pharma' is making Thyroxine Sodium I.P., B.P., U.S.P. All these items have ideally met world standards. Our 3.5-Diiodo-L-Thyronine, an intermediate in the synthesis of Thyroxine, is accepted by drug companies abroad.

2000
ONWARD MARCH

Our R&D Department is very busy nowadays in developing several new products especially Biological Stains. We developed and started the production of ANINACRINE HYDROCHLORIDE, potent the disinfectant. We are in the process of developing certain high value items and also some essential drugs.
